Brisbane, QLD, AUSTRALIA - March 23, 2004 - Just one day after the TV Week Logie organisers announced their predictable list of nominees, the race has begun for the much less coveted Australian television industry accolades.
Starting today, votes are being taken over the Internet for the third annual TV Fugly Awards which are the humorous alternative to the Logies that formally recognise the worst that Australian television has offered viewers over the last 12 months.
The 2004 Fuglies, as they are affectionately known, are predicted to easily beat 2003's total of 25,722 votes with votes being cast in categories such as Most Over Exposed TV Personality, Worst TV Show, Most Biased Sporting Commentator and Worst Male & Female TV Personalities.
"Viewer dissatisfaction should be high this year," says TV Fugly Awards creator Anthony Dever, who is nothing more than a somewhat disgruntled TV viewer. "With the deluge of Reality TV, failed chat shows and axed drama series in the last 12 months, I can certainly see Australians being more willing to let their opinions be noted this year more than ever".
"Winners" in 2003 included Eddie McGuire who was voted both the 'Most Biased Sporting Commentator' and the 'Most Over Exposed TV Personality' with Channel 7's home renovation show Groundforce taking the dishonor as being voted the 'Worst TV Show'.
"I certainly never want anyone in the TV Industry to lose their job because of the Fuglies. I just hope that if they receive one, they take it as a kick up the bum and lift their game" says Dever.
But not all of the categories focus on negative aspects of the television industry. "The awards were originally started as a joke, so it is important to keep it fun," says Dever. Categories like Most Under-Acknowledged TV Show, Most Spankable Female TV Personality and Most Under-Acknowledged TV Personality clearly bring some balance to this alternative event.
Just as TV executives re-work programs in their quest keep up with the changing tastes of their audiences, the TV Fugly Awards also make a token effort each year to appear fresh and relevant.
This year, the two new 'token' categories are:
- Biggest Crying Blubbering Male on Reality TV in 2003
This category will be fought out between Anthony Sumbati from Australian Idol fame and Saxon Small whose tears were shown to Australia while he appeared on Big Brother 3.
- Best Idea from the General Population for a New Reality TV Show
This category was created as a community service to help burnt out commercial television programmers who have found it difficult find and produce quality reality television program ideas.
Voting in all categories close at midnight April 14 and the final results will be announced in Melbourne on April 16, two days before the official Logie Awards ceremony as a sobering prequel to the biggest backslapping night of the year.
Recipients will then be sent their paper certificate to commemorate the dishonorable achievement of being part Australian Television history.
